Misconceptions About Metal

(remainder: this is just my opinion so don't freak out)
I feel Metal is one of the most misunderstood genres out there.
listen to couple of tracks from these albums listed below

Pagan's Mind - Celestial Entrance (Power metal)
Gorguts - Erosion of Sanity (Death Metal)
Overkill - Feel the Fire (Thrash Metal)
Gorgoroth - Pentagram (Black Metal)
Ensiferum - Ensiferum (Viking Metal)
Judas Priest - Sin After Sin (Traditional/heavy metal)

Listen to the musical traits, the way the riffs are presented
though Death Metal is a completely different animal than power metal, both these styles as well as black metal evolved from thrash metal which in turn was spawned from the new wave of british heavy metal acts of the late 70's/early 80's whom were spawned from the early metal acts like Black Sabbath and such. Any way my point is that the subgenres of metal i listed are all interconnected (continued on next post)

and share traits with each other. Now why can't more hardcore punk leaning acts like Whitechapel, Trivium and Killswitch engage be considered metal genres? Because they're called metalCORE. that name suggests it is hardcore with metal influences, therefore these groups are varients of the harcore punk genre. The music utilizes breakdowns and has a hardcore-dirived screamed vocal delivery. Though these groups have some death and thrash metal influences, their overall sound sill remains in the hardcore punk genre. Keep in mind i am not trying to belittle these bands in anyway, I am just trying to set the record straight. Too many uninformed people are labeling these hardcore groups metal when they haven't even heard actual metal. Truthfully i actually like some metalcore groups like Whitechapel although i consider them hardcore bands.

Anyway thats all i had to say. Enjoy Metal and Metalcore, but just don't confuse the two different genres. :D

I don't care what magazines etc. label a genre of an album. Bands rarely do this themselves, and albums rarely fit only exactly one genre either, but usually have influences of several ones. The important thing is, that I like their style, no matter what it's called. It's hard to keep track with all those sub genres anyways.
