Alice In Chains: Black Gives Way to Blue

Discuss the problems of clipped/overcompressed/limited albums where the recording suffers as a result

Alice In Chains: Black Gives Way to Blue

Postby jstawars » Tue Mar 02, 2010 4:04 pm

I just picked up this LP last week and it was the last straw for me. It is unlistenable. Alice in Chains already pushed the louness envelope with their previous work, but this record sounds just as bad as Death Magnetic. I am glad I found this website so I can do some research before considering purchasing anything new anymore.

Thanks for everyone who contributes to this site.

In case you didn't find it yet, you will find the DR database quite useful too: http://dr.loudness-war.info/

Yes, I have looked at the website. Its is great and I hope it really grows. I picked a heck of a time to go analog, as I would love to send in samples to get the database larger. I don't really have the means to convert LPs to FLAC. Something like that would be a great thing for vinyl junkies, in seeing if the LP master is any better than the digital release. I only know of two that are, White Stripes "Icky Thump" and Mudcrutch's newest. Everything esle seems to be taken from the crappy compressed CD master.

If you are happy on analog, you don't need to. For the sake of the data base, don't bother. Even if the same master was used for vinyl, it is very likely that the DR value will increase due to tolerances in circuitry. Especially on clipped masters, which makes a DR comparison rather pointless, unfortunately.

And Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Stadium Arcadium" has got a decent vinyl mastering.

Too bad, those are only a few exceptions among many vinyls which sound just as bad as their CD counterparts.

Thanks for the info. I have been learning alot lately, it makes so much sense to me now. I always wondering why most recent releases I have purchased in the last few years aside from GNR, some Beck, and White Stripes to name a few, have sounded like rubbish. Plus now I know why I always perferred most original vinyl LPs over most "remastered" CDs. I am not one of those "vinyl sounds better than CD" goofballs, just one that in general preferred the sound and experience of vinyl over CD. Now I know it had little to do with the CD medium but rather because of the horsecrap conversion to digital and/or "remastering" ("recompressing" is a better word).

I now typically run any from anything that has "remastered" associated with it, unless it is from MFSL (I have even heard those can be hit or miss now too). I got burned by the Pearl Jam Ten reissue, sounds like shit, the original CD is far superior. I was going to pick up the Jimi Hendrix and Pantera vinyl reissues, but now I am going to look for the originals instead.

Based on jNive's tipis on this forum, I have managed to enhance this album slightly and made it listenable. I would love to hear jNive's take on it, though, as he's much more experienced than I'll ever be ;)
