Discuss the problems of clipped/overcompressed/limited albums where the recording suffers as a result

Goo Goo Dolls

I probably shouldn't admit to liking Let Love In by Goo Goo Dolls but, as far as I know, there ain't no crime in enjoying radio friendly music. However, the compression on this CD is hideous! The distortion is incredible. If this is how the band think their art should be portrayed then they need to reconsider their career options.
Ted Jensen did this one and i'm a big fan of his work as he can usually deliver a loud disc that sounds punchy. This time i'm guessing that, like Death Magnetic, he got overloaded mixes.

Sadly, GGD and Warners didn't learn their lesson - The Greatest Hits Vol 1 release is about as musically satisfying as a broken fan belt.

I have just been enlightened to the entire loudness wars issue based on the sound quality of this one track, Let Love In by the Goo Goo Dolls. I thought I was going mad hearing a real distortion of the vocals in the chorus despite playing through a relatively expensive hifi; it really spoils my enjoyment of the song! Anyway after an hour googling I am now wiser to this issue and will be keeping an eye on this website, thanks for raising awareness.

The higher fidelity of the sound system, the more the negatives effects of a brickwalled master are going to be evident. It is kind of like listening to an am talk radio show in your car or on a small radio, it gets the job done, no big deal. Put the AM dial on a good stereo system, it will pick up all the static and crap that is not as evident or distracting on lower fidelity sources. This is partly the reason why we are losing the battle, most people listen to music on low fidelity sources, so it goes unnoticed, and/or in many ways sounds "better" to the listener, since they are in their car or have their $3 ipod earbuds shoved in their ear.
