1991 isn't a pretty good year to release a heavily produced hard rock album, especially since Nirvana was going to dominate the charts in 1992

Perhaps, since it sounds even more horrible when overcompressed, ie. the release curve of the reverb is compromised into one steady noise. I don't like excessive reverb, anyway. On the other hand, recorded in an isolated room and mixed compeletely without reverb sounds dull indeed.

I miss the drum reverb a lot on today's albums. And yes, at least one of the reasons why it was abandoned was that it doesn't compress well. There's also this trend to sound "raw", what in most cases means lifeless and loud
