Revamped Dynamic Range meters coming soon

Postby Dream » Fri Jun 17, 2011 2:00 am

From pleasurize:

This version [Foobar2000 plugin] has an expiration date set to 31 August 2011. Around this date an update is planned for the Dynamic Range Meters and this foobar2000 component. These releases will have an updated algorithm for the DR metering.

The revamped meter will most likely make this list obsolete http://dr.loudness-war.info/ - unless the algorithm changes are very minor

If what's I think it coming then it's a good thing and it won't make the database obsolete at all!

I predict they will make the new meter based on R128... however I have yet to wrap my head around it. Ok... I know 1 LU = 1DB, but it has a much different way of calculating and I read some PDF but I'm still confused... it no longer uses peak metering for loudness, so does this mean that the new meter will no longer give RMS readings? As it is, the current DR meter isn't even DBFS, it's DBFS+3.

Why will it not make the current database obsolete? Well for one, RMS is still going to be a popular way to measure loudness and their recommendations for dynamic material still holds true. That database will eventually meet the grim reaper anyways. I wish I could work for Pleasurize and get things rolling... they were supposed to have a database just like this one but WAY better and also maintained by the labels. I have yet to see anything.

YES! The expiration has commenced! We can now hold out for an updated algorithm!

(Note: If you still want to use the Foobar2000 plugin, just manually set the clock before September 1, 2011. It does not have any elaborate checks or way to prevent it's use. Foobar doesn't even have to be restarted.)

In the meantime you can download an updated foobar2000 component from the author's website, which doesn't expire and has some improvements:
